Oil paintings on canvas
Date
1987
This series of oil paintings on canvas was made as a means of expressing the social angst which was so palpable during the dying days of Apartheid in South Africa. It was a time of huge social upheaval and change. As the Nationalist government took steps to "Cross the Rubicon", society at large took its own steps to force change through protest. The concomitant violence that accompanied this surge in events, produced an anxiety that swirled beneath the veneer of the everyday. The series began with "Car's on Fire and Falling" and ended with "Decisive Descent". The "Hanged Man" was derived from the Tarot card of the same name, signalling that change was about to happen. The imagery is based on my personal collection of Japanese tin toys and Tarot imagery.
